i feel old…basically.
Well, my studio work ended up being pretty cool, surprisingly enough, and I feel like our review went quite well. We actually got to have our review in the sophomore studio space, which was awesome. ‘Why?’ you may ask…well, because this week was the culmination of their lamp project, naturally. We all still have really strong memories of our time spent on our lamp projects last year, and it was kind of amazing to see how much work they’d all put into their lighting projects too. Some of them were beautiful, well-made, and oh-so creative. Then, of course, our favorite ones were the hideous, hot-glued, deformed piles of plexiglass and veneer. Wow. On a side note- It’s always amazing to me how much easier it is to be hyper-critical of others’ work, but I feel like our criticism was partially validated- I mean, we’d all done the exact same project, except…good. (excuse my slightly less than grammatically-correct statement, but I feel that it best conveys the overall expression…) The coolest one was this awesome, pirate-themed-ish fixture- the shade was a sort of a treasure map on parchment which the kid had aged with coffee and tea, then burned the edges to complete the effect. THEN, since part of the challenge was to not use any mechanical fasteners or something, he’d joined the edges with a wax seal. SO cool. The rest of it was equally cool, but I’m kind of tired due to the post-review caffeine crash effect. The only other fixture worth mentioning was the literal tangle of veneer held together with (no joke) fishing string, and all kind of suspended awkwardly from the ceiling. While we were presenting in that space, a chunk of it actually fell off, and crashed onto one of the desks. Woah. Way to go, sophomore. Kbye.
